Everyone is impacted by the standards of white supremacy that circulate in the culture at large, albeit with different outcomes based on our proximity to them. This, of course, includes Black men, who are not outside of culture or unaffected by representations of ideal beauty. When white women insensitively flaunt their relationships with Black men in front of Black women, the heteronormative message of white women as most desirable may be painfully reinscribed, as well as serving as a reminder of how oblivious white people can remain to white supremacy, even when in intimate cross-racial relationships.
White women who use their cross-racial marriages as evidence that they are free of racism are relying on the form of credentialing I have discussed as proximity. This is the notion that a racist could not tolerate being physically near a Black person. Unfortunately, proximity is not a convincing argument for a lack of racismâit only conveys a lack of critical consciousness about white supremacy and how it functions. A white woman who makes this claim to establish a lack of racism is likely not one who will be open to any suggestion to the contrary.
I want to be clear that I am not saying we cannot or should not tell anyone we are married across race. Sharing our racial insights is important, and relationships can be a rich source of insight. I am also not saying that all Black women feel similarly about white women sharing these relationships. But in recognition of a range of possible impacts, white women should share this information with a sense of timing, awareness, and sensitivity.
